Ingredients For Dal Tadka Recipe:

For Dal:

  • 1 cup yellow lentils (toor/moong dal)
  • 3 cups water
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt

For Tadka:

  • 2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  •  1 onion, finely chopped
  •  2 tomatoes, chopped
  •  2 green chilies, chopped finely
  • 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 inch ginger and garlic sliced cut
  • 1 teaspoon red chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish

Instructions:

Preparation of Lentils/ Dal Tadka:

  • Rinse the toor dal/ moong dal perfectly under cold /normal water.
  • Take a pressure cooker, combine the lentils, water, turmeric powder, and salt.
  • Cook it on medium heat for about 3-4 whistles or till the lentils are soft and cooked well.
  • Mash the cooked lentils using a ladle to get a smooth consistency. keep it aside.

Tadka (Tempering):

  • Take a deep pan or kadhai, heat ghee on medium heat.
  •  Add green chilies (round cut) and mustard seeds and cumin seeds,  make all splutter.
  • Sprinkle asafoetida for a special flavor.
  • Put finely chopped onions and saute until they turn into golden color.Add ginger garlic paste.
  • Stir the ginger-garlic paste with spices and cook it for 1-2 minutes until the raw smell goes away.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and salt. Cook until the tomatoes turns soft and the oil starts to separate.

Spice Infusion:

  • Add red chili powder, coriander powder and garam masala to the mixture.. Stir well to mix the spices evenly to the Dal Tadka.
  • Add salt as per taste. Remember, dal already contains salt, so adjust suchwise.

Combining Dal and Masala:

  • Transfer the mashed lentils into the pan with the prepared masala.
  • Mix everything evenly, ensuring the spices are well mixed into the lentils (dal).
  • Cook the dal on low heat for 8-10 minutes, allowing the Dal tadka recipe flavors to meld together with the masala.
  • Transfer the Dal to an utensil.
  • Take a tadka pan, heat 2 teaspoonful oil ,add some inions and green chilies put it in oil,tomatoes 1 teaspoonful (cook it 15-20%) and add chili powder immediately and pour it on Dal Tadka Recipe and cover it with a lid to the aroma of Tadka mix with dal evenly.
